About Locksmith
What is Locksmith?
Locksmith is a Shopify app for access control in the Online Store channel. You lock products, collections, pages, prices, or the whole store, and decide who gets in with keys made of conditions, such as a customer tag, a passcode, a secret link, a location, or a purchase history.
Who makes Locksmith?
Locksmith is made by Lightward, which also makes Mechanic. It launched on the Shopify App Store in 2014, carries the Built for Shopify badge, and won a 2025 Shopify Build Award.
What's the difference between a lock, a key, and a condition?
A lock decides what's restricted. A key is a way in, and a lock can have several; any key that works opens the lock. A condition is something that must be true, like "customer is tagged with wholesale". A key can hold several conditions, and it works only when all of them are true.
What can Locksmith lock?
The entire store, products, products by tag, collections, all products, product variants, vendors, pages, blogs, articles by tag, search, the cart, the customer login and registration pages, and prices and add-to-cart buttons. Developers can also write locks in Liquid.
What conditions can grant access?
Customer conditions (signed in, tagged with, email address on a list or from a domain, number of orders, has purchased), passcodes and passcode lists, secret links, visitor location, IP address, store domain, a confirmation prompt, dates, times and weekly schedules, cart contents and cart value, Klaviyo and Mailchimp list membership, and custom Liquid. Every condition can be inverted.
Can Locksmith hide prices until customers log in?
Yes. Lock the products and turn on price and add-to-cart hiding. Guests see a sign-in prompt where the buy buttons were, and customers who meet your conditions see prices. No theme code is needed for most themes.
Setup & compatibility
Do I need to edit my theme?
For most stores, no. Locks, hidden lists, and price hiding are set up in the app, and your theme updates within seconds of saving. Developers can use manual mode and Locksmith's Liquid variables when they want to lock only part of a page.
Does Locksmith work with Shopify's new customer accounts?
Yes. Locksmith works with both new and legacy Shopify customer accounts, and it uses your Shopify customers rather than a separate login.
Does Locksmith work with Shopify B2B or the Wholesale channel?
Locksmith works in the Online Store channel. Its wholesale setups use customer tags, not Shopify B2B companies or catalogs, and it doesn't work in Shopify's separate Wholesale channel or the Buy Button.
Does Locksmith work with Shopify Markets?
Yes. If your markets use separate domains or subdomains, use the store domain condition. Otherwise, use a custom Liquid condition based on the visitor's locale or localization.
What happens to locked products in the Shop app?
Locked products are removed from the Shop app by default, so private products stay private there too.
Can I translate Locksmith's messages?
Yes. Locksmith's prompts and messages can be translated with your theme's locale files, so each language gets its own text.
Search engines & protection
How does Locksmith affect SEO?
Locksmith adds a noindex tag to locked pages by default, and it can remove locked items from your sitemap and storefront search. It treats search engines exactly like visitors, so a crawler sees what a visitor without access sees. Pages locked by location or IP address generally can't be indexed.
Can people find hidden prices in the page source?
It's possible. Locksmith hides prices in your theme's product templates, but SEO markup and analytics tools can still include prices in the page source. The cart and checkout always show prices, so hide buy buttons whenever you hide prices.
Can customers get around a lock with a cart link?
Use checkout validation to prevent that. It only lets customers with the right tags buy products with matching tags, even through cart permalinks or bots.
How accurate is location-based locking?
Location is based on the visitor's IP address, so it's approximate, and visitors using a VPN may appear to be somewhere else. To control where orders ship, use Shopify's shipping settings as well.
Pricing & support
How much does Locksmith cost?
Locksmith suggests a monthly price based on your Shopify plan: $12 for Basic Shopify, $29 for Grow, $99 for Advanced, and $199 for Shopify Plus. If the suggested price doesn't feel right, tell us a number that does.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every plan starts with a 15-day free trial, with no usage fees.
How do I get help?
Email team@uselocksmith.com. A person on the Lightward team will reply, usually within 24 hours. The Locksmith guide has tutorials for most setups.
