Use case · Members & staff

Build a members-only area in your store.

Close the whole store to the public, or just one section of it. Decide who's a member with a customer tag, an email list, a subscription, or a purchase, and Locksmith handles the sign-in and registration prompts.

The setup

An approved-members store.

  1. Lock

The entire store, leaving the home page, policy pages, and customer account pages open.

  2. Key

One condition: the customer is tagged with approved.

  3. Everyone else

New visitors see a registration prompt. Customers waiting for approval see a message you write.

Tag a customer, and the store opens for them on their next page view.

Choose a setup

Four ways to define a member.

Approved accounts

Customers register, you review them, and you add a tag to approve them. Use this for trade-only stores, professional pricing, or invitation-only shops.

Approving registrations →

Paid memberships

Subscription apps tag customers while their subscription is active. Locksmith opens member content for that tag. The guide covers ReCharge, PayWhirl, Seal Subscriptions, and Appfox.

Membership with ReCharge →

Your team

Give staff a private area with employee pricing or internal products. Tag each employee's customer account staff yourself, and use a key with the condition "customer is tagged with staff". Remove the tag when someone leaves.

Private team areas →

Customers who bought something

Open a course, video, or download page for customers who have purchased the product that unlocks it. Match by SKU, title, or product tag.

Set it up

An approved-members store in four steps.

  1. Lock the entire store

Create a lock on the entire store, and leave the home page, policy pages, and customer pages open so visitors can read about you and register.

  2. Add a key

Give the key one condition: "customer is tagged with approved". To let staff in too, add a second key with the condition "customer is tagged with staff", and add that tag only to your employees' accounts. Any key that works opens the lock.

  3. Write the messages

Use the registration prompt for guests, and a message for signed-in customers who aren't approved yet. Locksmith styles both to match your theme, and you can translate them.

  4. Approve customers

Add the approved tag in Shopify, or let another app or a Mechanic task do it for you.

Questions

Before you set it up

Does Locksmith have its own member accounts?

No. Locksmith uses your Shopify customer accounts, and works with both new and legacy customer accounts. There's no separate login for your customers to manage.

Will locked pages show up in Google?

Locksmith can hide locked resources from your sitemap and mark them so search engines don't index them. It can also hide them from collections, search results, and navigation menus.

Can members see different things from each other?

Yes. Use one tag per membership level, and give each level's content its own lock, with a key for that level's tag.
