Use case · Password protection

Password protect any page, product, or collection on Shopify.

Shopify's built-in password locks the whole store with one shared password. To protect a single page, product, collection, or blog, or to use more than one password, use Locksmith: lock the item, then add a key with a passcode condition. Visitors see a passcode form styled to match your theme, and anyone with the passcode gets in.

The setup

A password-protected press page.

  1. Lock

    The page "Press kit".

  2. Key

One condition: the visitor gives the passcode PRESS2026.

  3. Everyone else

A passcode form with your own message, styled to match your theme.

The rest of your store stays public.

Compare

Shopify's store password vs. Locksmith

Shopify's password (private mode) is made for stores that aren't open yet. Locksmith is made for stores that are open, with some things that shouldn't be.

How to password protect a page on Shopify

  1. Install Locksmith

Install Locksmith from the Shopify App Store. Every plan starts with a 15-day free trial.

  2. Create a lock

In Locksmith, search for the page, product, collection, or blog you want to protect, and create a lock on it. One lock can cover several items of the same type.

  3. Add a passcode key

Add a key with the condition "visitor gives the passcode", and type the passcode. Use "gives one of many passcodes" for a list, or a passcode input list for single-use codes.

  4. Write the message and save

Customize the text on the passcode form, or send each passcode to a different page after it's entered. Save, and your theme updates within seconds.

Questions

Password protection questions

Can I password protect one page without locking my whole Shopify store?

Yes. Shopify's store password covers the whole store, but Locksmith can lock a single page, product, collection, or blog with a passcode and leave everything else public.

Can I password protect my whole store but leave the home page open?

Yes. Lock the entire store with Locksmith and leave the home page, policy pages, or customer account pages open.

Can I give different people different passwords?

Yes. Use "gives one of many passcodes" for a short list, or a passcode input list for thousands of codes, which can be single-use. You can also send each passcode to its own page after it's entered.

Will Google index a password-protected page?

No, not by default. Locksmith adds a noindex tag to locked pages, and it treats search engines exactly like visitors, so crawlers without the passcode see the passcode form, not the content.

How secure is a shared passcode?

Anyone who has the passcode can open the lock, so treat it like any shared password. When access needs to be personal, use single-use codes or customer accounts instead.
